A framework for causal analysis

We build the scaffolding that the rest of the course rests on: treatment assignment as a multi-stage process, different notions of policy invariance, and the menu of causal effects (ATE, ATT, LATE, MTE) with their corresponding assumptions. Knowing which effect a paper identifies — and which it assumes away — is the single most useful skill for reading the applied literature critically.
